Mrs Lordina Mahama

Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has made a passionate appeal for collaborative efforts to create a peaceful world with opportunities for growth and the well-being of future leaders.

She made the appeal at the annual prayer service for peace and hope for children at the opening of 80th UN General Assembly in New York on Monday, September 22, 2025.

The event comes at a period when children face uncertainty amidst scaled back funding and mistrust in institutions, eroding hope.

Mrs Mahama noted that the challenges facing children today, especially the vulnerable, are immense. That notwithstanding, she expressed optimism that these can be addressed through prayer and commitment to confront the rapid changing global order.

“We gather here from different nations and cultures but we are united by our shared faith. Through prayer and decisive leadership, we can create a world where every child is protected and empowered to achieve their full potential,” she noted.

She expressed particular concern about the greater percentage of vulnerable children caught up in armed conflict and humanitarian crisis in Africa where they are robbed of their childhood, forced to fight and endure terrible experiences.

“These are precious lives destroyed by circumstances beyond their control. When nations fail to focus on policies that safeguard the home, strengthen communities, and nurture the youth, it is our children that will suffer the most. They are the ones who lose parents, siblings, homes, dreams and carry emotional scars that can last forever” she emphasised.

The First Lady averred that through her Lordina Foundation, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the welfare of the underprivileged in Ghana, particularly orphans and the vulnerable, she has been able to change lives, with the hope that, many of such philanthropic work across the globe will impact the world with the needed support.

The Annual prayer service for children is facilitated by the World Vision International in partnership with the World Council of Churches, Caritas Internationals, the Episcopal Church and other faith-based organizations.

In attendance was the Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Administration, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, and other officials of the Lordina Foundation.
