The government’s concerted effort to combat illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey’, has yielded results in the Ahafo Region.

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), carried out an operation successfully flushing out illegal miners from a site at Bronikrom – Hwediem.

The operation was highlighted by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Minister for Government Communications, who posted details on his X handle.

According to his update, NAIMOS “continues to strike at the heart of illegal mining,” arresting several “Galamsey operators,” including a Burkinabe national, at a site dangerously close to major infrastructure, approximately 10 meters from the main Hwediem – Goaso Highway.

The continuous operations by NAIMOS is an indication of the government’s commitment to eradicating the menace of illegal mining that has caused widespread environmental devastation across the country.

Bompata residents protest against environmental destruction

In a related development, a wave of public discontent against destructive mining practices is sweeping through the Ashanti Region. Residents of Bompata, located in the Asante Akyem South district, have taken to the streets to protest the rampant and irresponsible mining activities plaguing their community.

The demonstrators voiced their anger over the severe environmental impact of the operations.

Reports indicate that several arable lands have been destroyed, rendering them unusable for agriculture, and vital water bodies have been heavily polluted. The community is protesting the complete ripping apart of their natural vegetation due to the miners’ activities.

The protest highlights the deep rift between communities dependent on their land and water resources and the illegal miners whose activities continue to threaten livelihoods and ecological stability.

3News reporter, William Evans-Nkum, is currently monitoring the unfolding protest in Bompata and is expected to provide comprehensive updates on the demonstration and any official response in subsequent reports.
