The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects for the unlawful possession of a large cache of ammunition following an operation at the Kantanso-Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, identified as Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, a mate, were arrested on December 26, 2025, when police officers on duty intercepted a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18.

The vehicle was travelling from Accra towards Walewale, en route to Paga.

According to the police, a thorough search of the bus uncovered two concealed containers containing a total of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

A subsequent search further revealed a bag hidden under the driver’s seat, which contained two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the bus and all retrieved exhibits have been impounded for further examination.

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the ammunition and related items, as well as any possible links to criminal networks.
