Renowned lawyer and broadcast journalist, Samson Lardy Ayenini, has urged Ghanaians to take ownership of the country’s democracy beyond the ballot box and not leave it for only the political elites.
Speaking at this year’s Seminar of the Communication and Media Studies Students’ Association (CoMSSA), dubbed CoMSSAFest 2025 under the theme “The Role of Effective Communication Deepening Our Democracy,” he delivered a powerful message about the true meaning of nation-building.
The Newsfile host on Joy News said, “Events like this are more than academic exercises. They are critical spaces for reflection, interrogation, and reawakening of our individual and collective duties in our democracy.”
Lawyer Ayenini emphasised that democracy is not a distant concept but a living system that thrives not only on elections and institutions but also on the active involvement of citizens. He recounted a moment when papers were dropped during the program, and he thought it was a demonstration of elections. This, he said, reflected how elections have not always delivered the dividends expected in Ghana’s democratic journey.
“Democracy is not the property of the political elites. Democracy is not a party machinery,” Samson declared firmly, adding that every Ghanaian has a duty to safeguard the democratic process.
He further cited Article 1, Clause 1, which affirms that the sovereignty of Ghana resides in its people, in whose name and for whose welfare the powers of government must be exercised.
Drawing on the 1992 Constitution, he reminded patrons that the foundation of Ghana’s democracy is rooted in the people. “Our Constitution makes this resoundingly clear. In its preamble, it declares that the powers of government spring from the sovereign will of the people. Who are the people? You. Me,” he stressed.
