Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has advised Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to pay a visit to former President Nana Akufo-Addo if he truly wants to understand reparatory justice.
Speaking at an event on Tuesday, Ablakwa responded to recent comments by Afenyo-Markin that questioned aspects of the transatlantic slave trade reparations debate.
“He should sit with him and let former President Akufo-Addo educate him on reparatory justice,” Ablakwa said, suggesting the Easter break would be a good time for that lesson.
Afenyo-Markin had stirred controversy last week by arguing that some Africans who participated in the slave trade also bear responsibility. Critics say he downplayed the role of Western powers.
With the UN recently recognizing transatlantic slavery as a crime against humanity, Ablakwa’s jab suggests the Minority Leader needs a quick refresher before his next parliamentary pronouncement.
