Oroko Radio, the not-for-profit independent internet radio station based in Accra, is pressing pause on its broadcasts for the foreseeable future.

Over the years, Oroko has grown into more than just a radio station. It’s been a cultural hub, offering a platform for local musicians, DJs, thinkers, moderators, and content creators to express themselves through sound. From nurturing homegrown talent to building connections with visiting artists and global community projects, Oroko has played a key role in shaping alternative creative culture in Accra and beyond.

In a statement shared on Instagram, the team revealed that the decision comes down to sustainability. As a not-for-profit, much of their work has been powered by grants, collaborations, and unpaid contributions from the team. Unfortunately, maintaining regular broadcasts under these conditions has become increasingly unsustainable.

While the station goes quiet on air, Oroko isn’t disappearing entirely. The team says they’ll continue to honour existing commitments and shift focus toward events, workshops, and collaborative projects in the coming months-creating new ways to spotlight the voices within their global community.
