A driver and his mate narrowly escaped death after armed robbers attacked their cargo truck on the Bibiani–Goaso road.
The incident occurred at Sereso in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The victim, Mohammed Yakubu, 60, was driving a blue-black Mitsubishi cargo truck with registration number AW 621-12 from Akodie towards Kumasi when the robbers struck.
Upon reaching Sereso, the assailants, who had mounted a roadblock, opened fire on the vehicle, shooting him in the abdomen.
An eyewitness, Sampson Dwumah, recount that attackers had blocked the road between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and began shooting when the truck approached.
“We saw that the robbers had blocked the road, and immediately the truck got close, they opened fire. The driver signaled that he had been shot. It was a terrifying moment, and people were running for safety,” he recounted.
Residents in the area rushed the injured driver to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Residents of Sereso say they are living in fear following the increasing spate of armed robbery attacks along the stretch.
They are appealing to the Inspector-General of Police to deploy more personnel and establish checkpoints to restore safety.
