A serious fire broke out at the GRIDCo substation connected to the Akosombo Dam, completely destroying the main control room and critical switchyard equipment. The incident, which happened on April 23, 2026, has left the facility in ruins, with images showing charred electrical panels, collapsed ceilings, and piles of burnt debris scattered across the control areas.
GRIDCo officials were seen inspecting the extensive damage on site. One video from the scene captures the heartbreaking state of the once-functional control room—now reduced to blackened walls, melted wiring, and destroyed consoles. Experts say the primary control room may need to be fully rebuilt before normal operations can resume.
The fire forced an immediate shutdown, cutting off more than 1,000 MW of power generation. This triggered widespread power outages affecting several regions, including Ashanti, Central, and parts of Tema. In the days since, power companies have gradually brought some generation units back online, easing the immediate crisis. However, full restoration of stable supply depends heavily on rebuilding the damaged infrastructure.
Authorities have not yet released an official cause of the fire, and investigations are ongoing. The Akosombo Dam remains Ghana’s largest hydroelectric power source, making this incident a major concern for the country’s energy security.
GRIDCo and the Volta River Authority are expected to provide more updates soon on the timeline for repairs and how they plan to prevent similar incidents in the future. For now, many Ghanaians continue to experience unreliable power as recovery efforts move forward.
