President John Dramani Mahama is expected to visit the Akosombo Dam on Thursday, April 30, to assess the impact of a recent fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) substation, leading to intermittent power outages.

The fire, which affected critical equipment at the substation, led to the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid, disrupting power supply and contributing to renewed “dumsor” in several areas.

The President’s visit is expected to provide an assessment of the situation, as the government
says efforts are being put in place to fully restore the power supply.

So far, four power generation units at the dam have been successfully brought into operation, according to the Energy Minister John Jinapor, with the remaining expected to be fully recovered this week.

The President’s tour will also allow for briefings from technical teams on ongoing repair works and measures being put in place to prevent future disruptions within the power transmission system.
