Mamprusi Leaders and Supporters Gather at Accra High Court to Back Naa Sheriga II in Bawku Chieftaincy Case

A significant number of Mamprusi community members and traditional leaders assembled outside the Accra High Court today to demonstrate their solidarity with Naa Alhaji Seidu Abagre, popularly known as Sheriga II, as his ongoing legal challenges connected to the Bawku dispute unfold.

Video from the scene shows the group standing firm in support, highlighting the deep divisions that continue to mark the long-standing conflict in the Upper East Region town. The gathering comes amid court proceedings involving the 79-year-old retired teacher, who has been a central figure in rival claims to the Bawku traditional skin.

Naa Seidu Abagre faces charges related to his role in the chieftaincy matter, including allegations of acting as a chief without proper authority. He has maintained his innocence throughout the process. Earlier court sessions granted him bail, but tensions remain high as both sides press their positions in the formal justice system.

The Bawku conflict, rooted in competing claims between Mamprusi and Kusasi groups over traditional leadership, has caused repeated unrest, loss of lives, and economic setbacks over the years. Recent mediation efforts, including those led by the Asantehene, have aimed to bring calm, yet court appearances like today’s show the issue is far from resolved.

Supporters view their presence as a peaceful show of unity for one of their own and a call for fairness in how the case is handled. Observers, however, note that such public demonstrations raise broader questions about balancing community interests with the independence of the judiciary.

As proceedings continue, many in Ghana hope for a lasting solution that respects customary traditions while upholding the rule of law, helping to restore peace and stability in the affected communities. Developments in the case are being watched closely by stakeholders across the region.

A group of Mamprusi community members and their leaders have gathered at the Accra High Court to show their support as legal issues surrounding the involvement of Naa Alhaji Seidu Abagre (Sheriga II) in the Bawku conflict continue.
