Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, a Kumasi-based radio presenter with Wontumi FM, has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court after spending two weeks in police custody over allegations of publishing false news intended to cause fear and panic 2611.
Arrested on August 12, 2025, Asare was charged with one count of offensive conduct related to his on-air claim that President John Dramani Mahama had prior knowledge of the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two government ministers 258. The court set bail at GH₵100,000 with two sureties, both of whom must be civil servants 2611. His lawyers are currently finalizing the bail conditions, and the journalist is scheduled to reappear in court on September 1, 2025 27.
Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah referenced judicial precedent in his decision, noting that a similar case involving insults against former President Nana Akufo-Addo had initially resulted in remand before bail was granted 2611. The prosecution had opposed bail, citing ongoing investigations into the matter 2510.
The allegations against Asare originated from comments made during his “Nsempafie” program on Wontumi Radio, where he stated that families of the crash victims “must hold President Mahama responsible because he is aware of everything” . The prosecution argued that these remarks caused public uproar and panic, particularly during a period of national mourning 510.
President Mahama has previously addressed the nation, urging unity and cautioning against speculation regarding the crash 38. The government has initiated a transparent investigation into the incident, with technical assistance from international partners 38.
