Bawumia is the natural leader to unite NPP – Asenso-Boakye

Bantama MP, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has described Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the “natural leader” of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), capable of uniting the rank and file as the party prepares for the 2026 general elections.

Speaking shortly after Dr. Bawumia filed his nomination to contest the NPP’s presidential primaries, Asenso-Boakye said the Vice President had demonstrated an unmatched ability to bring people together.

“He has assumed the role as a natural leader of the party,” Asenso-Boakye declared. “He is the one who can bring everybody together. In going for the next election, we need unity. And unity lies in strength.”

The Bantama MP pushed back against claims by some aspirants that the party establishment was skewing the process in Bawumia’s favour. According to him, the overwhelming support the Vice President enjoys stems from the grassroots, not manipulation from party leadership.

“Some of the other candidates have alleged that the party seems to be pushing a certain establishment,” he said. “But if the grassroots is pushing, no one can stop it. I don’t know of anything that the party leadership has done to provoke one single candidate.”

He also dismissed suggestions that Bawumia had underperformed electorally in certain strongholds. “We beat the NDC by over 600 votes. No other regime can compare our strength,” Asenso-Boakye insisted. “We gave you the highest votes in terms of percentage and absolute numbers, so what you are saying is not true.”

Asenso-Boakye maintained that the NPP’s path to victory in 2026 rests on presenting a candidate who embodies both competence and unity, stressing: “Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated that capacity, and that is why the base of the party is rallying behind him.”
