Ghana, Singapore Forge Closer Ties as Mahama Leads Historic State Visit

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hailed President John Dramani Mahama’s State Visit to Singapore as “historic,” describing it as a turning point in Ghana–Singapore relations.

Speaking at the Singapore Business Federation, Ghana–Singapore Business Dialogue 2025, under the theme “Forging Partnerships for Sustainable Economic Growth,” Ablakwa conveyed President Mahama’s appreciation for the warm hospitality extended by Singapore’s leaders and people.

“For the first time in our nation’s history, a Ghanaian President has been invited on a State Visit to Singapore.

This is a historic week, and it is clear that Ghana and Singapore are ready to chart a new path of shared prosperity, progress and transformation,” he said.

During bilateral talks with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, President Mahama praised Singapore’s transformation as an inspiration to Ghana, noting that the city-state had “defied economic theories” by achieving world-class development despite its small size and limited resources.

Ghana, he said, is determined to follow a similar path. As the country approaches its 70th independence anniversary in 2027, Mahama has rolled out reforms to stabilize the economy, strengthen the Ghana Cedi—currently rated as the strongest-performing currency globally—and restore investor confidence.

Minister Ablakwa highlighted that Fitch and other rating agencies have upgraded Ghana’s credit standing, lifting the country out of junk status.

He stressed that under Mahama’s leadership, Ghana has honored all contracts and agreements, with no expropriation or nationalization, ensuring a secure environment for foreign investors.

The visit also set the stage for new bilateral commitments. President Mahama pledged that Ghana and Singapore will conclude a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) before the end of 2025, creating fresh opportunities for Singaporean businesses in West Africa.

To further cement relations, Ghana will open its first consulate in Singapore next year, with President Mahama personally expected to attend the inauguration.

The Foreign Ministry has also been tasked with prioritizing economic diplomacy to make Ghana the “preferred destination” for Singaporean investments on the continent.

Ablakwa concluded that Ghana and Singapore’s strengthened partnership would be anchored in mutual respect, trust, and a shared vision for sustainable economic growth.
