Salam Mustapha dismisses poll predicting NDC victory in Akwatia by-election

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has rubbished an opinion poll projecting a win for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako, in the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

The survey, conducted by Global Info Analytics between August 27 and 28 with 2,050 sampled voters, suggested that Bediako was leading with 53%, while the NPP’s Solomon K. Asumadu trailed at 47%.

This marked a turnaround from the baseline poll, which had placed Asumadu slightly ahead with 50% against Bediako’s 44%.

But speaking in an interview on Channel One, Salam Mustapha insisted that the ruling party remained confident on the ground.

“Not at all [there is no panic among our ranks because of the poll putting NDC ahead],” he said.

“Mussa Dankwah can do his polls for all we care. We didn’t come here to do a picnic. We are working.”

Mustapha further argued that the NPP candidate enjoyed stronger community support despite the survey’s findings.

“Our candidate is more light up. As I am speaking to you we are in the hometown of the NDC candidate and come and see the people here and their response.

“This guy doesn’t even talk to his own father. His own community people say he is snubbish. He is disrespectful so they are ready to vote for the NPP,” he asserted.

The Akwatia by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, is shaping up to be a closely watched contest.

According to Global Info Analytics, development projects remain the key factor influencing voter choices, with 42% of respondents citing it as their top consideration.

With just days to go, both parties are intensifying their campaigns in a constituency that could serve as an early test of strength ahead of the 2026 general elections.
