Bernard Bediako, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, has taken a strong lead in the Akwatia by-election, based on provisional results streaming in from polling stations.
Certified figures from multiple centres place Bediako ahead of his main contender, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), in what has shaped up to be a hard-fought contest. The Liberal Progressive Party (LPP) trails with minimal support.
Polling across all 119 stations closed at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Results are now being collated under the oversight of Electoral Commission officials, security personnel, and party agents.
Although the official declaration is pending, early numbers suggest Bediako is consolidating his edge, fuelling guarded optimism among NDC supporters gathered at strategic locations across the constituency.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of Akwatia’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year. With the constituency long considered a swing seat, both the NDC and NPP waged intensive campaigns, treating the vote as a key barometer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Even as pockets of NDC supporters celebrate, party executives are urging restraint until the Electoral Commission releases the certified results.
