Accra Residents Demand Urgent Fix for Streetlights Crisis

Residents across Accra are raising serious concerns over faulty streetlights, calling on authorities to act fast as safety risks continue to rise across major roads.

From Mallam to Kasoa and other key routes, poor visibility at night has reportedly led to an increase in accidents, robberies, and general insecurity. With the rainy season approaching, many believe the situation could worsen if immediate action is not taken.

The conversation gained momentum online after influencer KalyJay sparked the #FixTheStreetLights movement, criticizing the slow pace of response despite earlier commitments from Linda Ocloo to restore 70% of streetlights and distribute over 4,000 units.

While some authorities point to theft and vandalism as key challenges, residents argue that consistent maintenance and accountability are the real gaps. For many, this is no longer just an infrastructure issue it’s about safety, mobility, and everyday life in the city.

As pressure mounts, all eyes are now on leadership to respond and deliver real solutions.
