The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has visited some polling centres where voting is ongoing in the Akwatia by-election.
The IGP together with some officers toured the polling centres to assess the situation on ground and ensure peace and calm.
Speaking to the media after visiting some polling centres on September 2, 2025, Christian Tetteh Yohuno was impressed with the peaceful situation so far.
He reassured residents in Akwatia that the police presence is to ensure peace and safety, not to intimidate any voter.
“Everything is going well, people are comporting themselves and the Electoral officials are also working without fear and then the police are also giving the protection that the they have to give.
“The presence of police is for peace and not intimidation. Our issue is that anywhere people don’t have police they say, bring police and now we have brought police so be peaceful and come out to vote,” he stated.
A board member of the Peace Council, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu who is also in Akwatia to observe the by-election urged electorates to comport themselves and avoid any violent or chaotic incident.
“I am talking to all young people and electorates in this place. Don’t allow yours to be taken to the Black Maria. It is not a pleasant experience and indeed you don’t also need it. This election is not do or die,” he noted.
Voting is underway in Akwatia by-election. Over 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots at 119 polling stations in the highly anticipated contest, which has become a major political showdown between the country’s two leading parties.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the area’s lawmaker, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
