The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned what it describes as threats of death and acts of physical assault made by key members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against leading NPP figures.
In a press statement signed and issued by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on Wednesday September 3, the NPP accused Chief Sofo Azorka, the 1st National Vice Chairman of the NDC, and Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, the Abuakwa North Constituency Communication Officer, of issuing death threats against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, and MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.
The party also alleges that its 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, was physically attacked by Chief Azorka and a group described as his “notorious hoodlums.”
“Such violent conduct by no mean a person than a National Officer of the ruling party and a constituency officer diminishes the gains of our democracy and has the potential to create further insecurity in the country,” the statement said, referencing Ghana’s recent drop in the Global Peace Index rankings.
The NPP says it will lodge a formal complaint with the Ghana Police Service and has called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately arrest and investigate all those involved, especially those seen in widely circulated videos of the incident.
“The recklessness of the actions of Chief Sofo Azorka and Alhaji Abdul Wahab ought to be properly investigated and punished,” the statement concluded.
