oting in the Akwatia by-election has officially ended, with counting of ballots now underway at various polling stations across the constituency.
The polls closed at 5 p.m. after hours of steady turnout, with voters choosing between the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Asumadu and the ruling National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Bernard Badidoo Bediako.
Reports from different polling centres indicate that the voting exercise was largely peaceful, despite heightened political tension in the run-up to the election.
The Akwatia seat became vacant following the passing of Ernest Kumi, the NPP Member of Parliament, earlier this year.
Both parties mounted vigorous campaigns in the lead up to the crucial polls, with analysts describing the race as a major test of grassroots support ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Official certified results are expected to be declared by the Electoral Commission once collation is completed.
