Eleven illegal miners have been arrested in the Aowin municipality of the Western North region. The suspects were apprehended by the Blue Water Guard team during an operation at the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve near Omanpe community.

According to information from the team’s commander, Desmond Armoh, the operation was carried out on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, following intelligence about ongoing galamsey activities in the forest reserve.

With the support of three Immigration officers, the team stormed the area, which was reportedly occupied by about 2,000 illegal miners. However, 11 individuals were successfully arrested during the operation.

The suspects have been handed over to the Enchi Police Command for further investigation. The operation also led to the seizure of one pumping machine, while two ‘chanfang’ machines used in the illegal mining were set ablaze on site.

Commander Armoh called on the government, particularly the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, to provide vehicles and logistics to aid in future anti-galamsey operations.

The Enchi Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Augustine Mensah, confirmed the arrest and assured that the suspects are in custody assisting with investigations. He also commended the Blue Water Guard for their efforts and pledged continued police support for such operations.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Aowin, Stephen Morcher, reaffirmed his commitment to the fight against illegal mining in the municipality.

He noted that 33 excavators previously seized remain in the custody of the assembly and warned that no illegal mining activity will be tolerated, especially within forest reserves and water bodies.

Mr. Morcher further assured that those involved in the illegal mining will face the full rigour of the law.
