The Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party has distanced itself from comments attributed to Asante Akim South MP, Kwaku Asante Boateng, regarding the historical role of Ashantis and their entitlement to leadership within the party.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Caucus described the remarks as offensive and contrary to the NPP’s values.

“These comments are deeply offensive, and run contrary to the spirit of unity, respect, and equality that the NPP stands for,” the statement said.

The Caucus stressed that the NPP is founded on principles of merit, equal opportunity, and inclusivity.

“Ours is a Party that welcomes and rewards merit, loyalty, and service and not lineage, tribe, or religious identity. Every member, regardless of origin or background, has an equal right to aspire to any position within the Party or in national leadership.”

It rejected any attempt to use ethnicity or history to divide the party.

“The Ashanti Region… rejects any attempt to use history, tribe, or identity to divide our ranks or to question the belonging of any loyal member,” the statement added.

Calling for disciplined communication within the party, the Caucus urged leaders and members to show restraint.

“We urge all members, particularly those in leadership, to be guided by restraint and decorum in their public statements,” it stated.

The Caucus reaffirmed its stance on unity and national cohesion. “The Ashanti Regional NPP Parliamentary Caucus stands firmly for a united Party and a united Ghana.”
