Kojo Poku has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to direct its anti-galamsey efforts at the financiers who bankroll illegal mining activities, rather than the young men working on the ground. The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has thrown its support behind President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to review the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), saying the system has long been plagued by unfair disparities. Reacting to the pledge, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah said the announcement was overdue. “How can you go to a university, do the same programme—meaning they have the same value—and yet,…

Lawyer and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has raised fresh concerns about reports suggesting that Ghana has entered into a new arrangement with the United States to receive non-Ghanaian deportees. In a post shared on his social media account, Barker-Vormawor drew a parallel with the controversy that erupted during former President John Mahama’s first term, when two Guantanamo Bay detainees were accepted into Ghana. “During Mr. Mahama’s first term as President, he entered into a secret deal to accept Guantanamo detainees into Ghana. “I spoke up against it and called the move tone-deaf,” he wrote. “This deal was challenged in the Supreme…

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has warned that Ghana is getting close to a point when the extensive destruction brought on by illegal mining, or galamsey, may necessitate the declaration of a state of emergency. This warning comes after Mahama’s remarks. Dr. Charles Mensa, the IEA’s board chair, emphasised at a media appearance on Wednesday,…
