Cedi stability depends on sound policies, not rhetoric — Naana Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called for a renewed national commitment to safeguarding the Ghana cedi and preserving the independence of the Bank of Ghana, stressing the need for fiscal discipline and accountable governance.

Speaking at the launch of the 60th anniversary of the Ghana Cedi in Accra on Tuesday, October 28, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang underscored the central bank’s vital role as a guardian of economic stability.

“We must protect the independence of the central bank. The BoG must remain a steward of stability. We must uphold the legal tender status of the cedi,” she stated.

The Vice President cautioned that public trust in the cedi cannot be taken for granted, noting that confidence in the currency must be constantly earned through responsible leadership.

“We are also aware that the trust in the cedi will not sustain itself. Confidence must be maintained with sound decisions, transparent actions, and accountable policies,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged both government and citizens to play active roles in protecting the gains made in stabilising the currency.

She emphasised the importance of prudent fiscal management, warning against reckless borrowing and widening deficits that could impose long-term costs on future generations.

“Government must lead by example and commit to real fiscal discipline. We must anchor public finances in realistic revenue plans, efficient spending, and long-term planning. Let every loan be tied to a return and every cedi spent to a corresponding value,” she added.
