The Coalition of Unpaid Newly Posted Teachers has threatened to stage a demonstration on September 30 to demand payment of salary arrears and the issuance of staff ID cards.
The group, comprising graduates from Colleges of Education and universities, says the protest will go ahead after the government failed to meet its September 23 deadline.
The teachers, who have worked for months without pay, say the situation has left them in severe financial distress. According to them, College-trained teachers have gone over a year without salaries, while their university-trained counterparts have remained unpaid for the past eight months.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, September 29, Lead Convenor of the association, Simon Kofi Nartey, said the protest will begin at Obra Spot and proceed through Jubilee House, the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and the Finance Ministry, before ending at Independence Square.
“The government is not being fair, GES and the Finance Ministry are not being fair to us, that is why we are taking to the streets more. And for our colleagues from the universities, they have also worked for nine months now, entering into the 10th month without a staff ID or salary as well. So for the colleges of education, we have done 13 months going into 14, while the university graduates have also done nine months going into 10 months.
He stressed, “With the demonstration, yes, it is coming off. All the sets and preparations have been far advanced, and so we’ve got permits tomorrow [September 30]. We start from Obra Spot through to the Jubilee House, back to the Ministry of Education and then the Ghana Education Service. We proceed to the Finance Ministry, and then finally we end everything at the Independence Square.”
