The High Court in Accra has cancelled the arrest warrant it issued earlier for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The decision came shortly after Chairman Wontumi appeared before the court later in the day. The warrant had been issued in the morning when he and his lawyers failed to show up for a scheduled hearing without giving any reason.
The case, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvi-Tay, was set for the filing of disclosures and case management. The prosecution team, led by Chief State Attorney, Stella Ohene Appiah, was present when the absence of the accused was noted.
Justice Kocuvi-Tay had earlier expressed disappointment over Wontumi’s failure to appear, prompting the court to issue a bench warrant. However, once he appeared, the judge withdrew the order.
Chairman Wontumi, together with Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Limited, is facing charges related to the unlawful assignment of mineral rights.
