Desist from inviting foreign bodies into Ghana’s constitutional matters – Ayine to GBA

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has cautioned the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) against inviting foreign interference in the country’s constitutional and democratic processes.

Speaking at the opening of the GBA’s Annual General Conference on Monday, September 15, 2025, Dr. Ayine stressed that while professional collaborations with foreign associations were useful, they should not cross into political interference.

“We should desist from the temptation of inviting foreign interference in our internal constitutional processes. As a professional body, there is nothing wrong with forming relationships with like-minded foreign associations. Such is necessary for a cross-section of ideas professionally. That is where it should end. Interference in constitutional politics risks violating the principle that sovereignty resides in the people of Ghana, in whose name and for whose benefit the powers of government are to be exercised,” he emphasised.

His remarks follow interventions by the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, which recently urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The Attorney General further expressed concern that the Association’s selective commentary on national issues risked creating the impression of political bias.

He urged the legal fraternity to safeguard its credibility by rising above partisanship and focusing on defending the Constitution and the sovereignty of the Ghanaian people.

“Our authority as a profession depends on public confidence that we stand above the fray of narrow partisanship. Let us therefore be the conscience of the public—fearless when governments overreach, impartial when opposition argues, and always faithful to the sovereignty of the people under the Constitution,” he stated.
