DStv Dispute: Protect consumers without killing businesses – Wonder Madilo to Sam George

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Wonder Madilo, has called on the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, to prioritise the introduction of a pay-as-you-consume policy in the ongoing standoff with MultiChoice Ghana over DSTV subscription fees.

In recent weeks, tensions have escalated between the ministry and the pay-TV operator over subscription price reductions, with government insisting on adjustments in line with the sharp appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, September 8, 2025, Mr Madilo argued that while the state has a duty to protect consumers, this responsibility should not come at the expense of service providers. He suggested a pay-as-you-consume model as a fairer alternative to the current demands on MultiChoice.

“I think the government should also look for another alternative in terms of the charging. It will be difficult for them to get DSTV to do a lot of the things asking for because the law says that the government of Ghana must protect the consumer, but that protection of the consumer is not to say that the other company will lose. There should be a middle ground…But I am also suggesting that the government of Ghana should be insisting on pay-as-you-consume, not the blanket payment,” he said.

Mr Madilo noted that such a system would give subscribers better value for money while balancing the interests of MultiChoice and consumers.

Meanwhile, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has confirmed a stakeholder meeting scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2025, to review DSTV pricing. The meeting will be chaired by Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation.
