Former Adansi Asokwa MP Kobina Tahir Hammond (K.T. Hammond) has issued a strong warning against reducing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 flagbearer race to a contest of wealth among the five aspirants who have submitted nominations.
Speaking in Adansi Asokwa on Wednesday, September 10, the veteran politician emphasized that the NPP was built on principles of selfless leadership, sacrifice, and visionary ideas rather than financial muscle.
“The NPP is blessed with many, many rich men and women who have supported the party since its founding in 1992. Such persons do not make noise. They don’t flaunt their wealth and tell us they must be the ones to lead,” Hammond stated.
His comments came as former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia began a three-day engagement with constituency executives in the Ashanti Region, launching a nationwide campaign focused on presenting his vision and ideas for the party and country’s development.
Hammond commended Bawumia’s approach, expressing concern about the increasing emphasis on wealth as a determining factor in leadership selection. He reminded party members that during the NPP’s most challenging periods, financiers supported the party quietly without seeking recognition.
“Leadership in NPP is based on a contest of ideas, a contest of visions for development. Let us get back to our values and choose a leader who reflects the values, visions, and principles of the NPP,” he urged.
The former MP explicitly endorsed Bawumia as the candidate best equipped to deliver victory for the NPP in the 2028 elections, citing his ideas and vision as paramount qualifications for leadership.
