Following the shocking dismissal of Erik Ten Hag from his role as head coach of German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, the club has officially appointed Kasper Hjulmand as his replacement.
53 year old Hjulmand returns to club head coaching for the first time since 2019 where he served as head coach of Danish Super League side FC Nordsjaelland.
It was his second head coaching stint with the club after leading Norsdjaelland to the league title in the 2012 season.
Between 2020 and 2024, Hjulmand was Denmark’s head coach and led the Scandinavian nation to the semifinals of the 2020 Euros.
Denmark failed to progress from the group stage at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and exited the 2024 Euros at the Round of 16 stage leading to Hjulmand’s resignation.
He takes over a Bayer Leverkusen side that sacked former Man United head coach Erick Ten Hag after the Dutchman picked up a point in two league games in the 2025-2026 season.
Ten Hag according to German media outlet BILD fell out with the Leverkusen Board and coaching staff early in his tenure for meddling in player recruitment and forcing players to do pushups during long training sessions.
