President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the National Security Council believes the country can win the fight against galamsey without declaring a state of emergency.
There have been calls on the president to declare a state of emergency, especially in areas where illegal mining takes place.
However, the president has insisted that there is no need for a State of Emergency per the counsel of the National Security Council.
He indicates that he is willing to declare a state of emergency anytime the need be to help in the fight against the menace.
“Yes, I have the power to do it, but the President acts not only on the authority but on the advice of the National Security Council. As of now, the National Security Council believes that we can win the fight against galamsey without a state of emergency.
I want to assure you that the day they advise me otherwise, that boss, now we need a state of emergency, I will not hesitate in declaring a state of emergency. We do still think that we have the powers to be able to win this fight and as we deploy more troops and apply more resources to the fight, I am sure that gradually we will begin to see that we are winning the fight,” he stated.
