The deployment follows the ECOWAS Chair’s order to immediately dispatch regional troops to Cotonou to uphold constitutional order and safeguard Benin’s territorial integrity.
The force will include contingents from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.
Sources indicate Ghana’s contribution may not exceed 100 personnel, although official numbers are yet to be confirmed.
The deployment is in line with ECOWAS’ wider security strategy, which includes a planned 1,650-troop standby force in 2026 as part of its renewed counter-terrorism efforts.
