Ghanaians react to GFA Congress’ approval of presidential term limit from two to three

Ghanaians on social media have reacted angrily to the outcome of the Ghana Football Association’s 31st Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

The GFA Congress took a significant step by approving a statues amendment to extend the term limits for its president from two to three terms and also to appoint a woman as the Second Vice president of the association.

The move to accept the proposal to appoint a woman as a Vice president of the GFA marks a historic step in Ghanaian football, ensuring that a woman holds a senior leadership position with real influence over decision-making in the football ecosystem.

While social media users applauded this decision, they criticized the 114 Congress Members who voted in favor of extending the term limit of the GFA president from two to three.

The debate surrounding the approved third term for the GFA president reflects broader concerns about leadership, accountability, and the future of football in Ghana.

One X user stated his disappointment with the approval of the third term, indicating that the GFA administration didn’t deserve a third term and we might later regret the decision.

“This is dangerous. It will come back to hurt us one day. I will not be surprised if Congress approves another four-year term.”

The Congress, mandated by Article 31 (2) of the GFA Statutes (2019), is held annually before the start of the football season to review progress, present financial and activity reports, and set future strategic directions for Ghanaian football.

Another X user also said that there shouldn’t be any complaints from the people if the administration doesn’t perform well.

“Any complaints from that same congress about poor management of football will be met with disdain.”

This amendment would allow a president to serve up to 12 years, mirroring global football governance norms and potentially reshaping the leadership landscape in Ghanaian football.

Congratulations Ghana Football People.

We succeeded in extending the term of office by Ghana FA president to three. If you haven’t tasted by power, you’ll never know how sweet this victory is.

When do we start the campaign for the fourth term limit? #GFACongress pic.twitter.com/x8EBmicX5l

GFA congress extends presidential mandate to 3 terms .
114 members voted yes representing 91 percent.

Every MP in Ghana who spoke against GFA 3 terms must resign after their second term in Parliament. Political hypocrisy

Thank you for your attention to this matter! pic.twitter.com/XFeePf1oqA

This decision by the Football Federation is a clear step backwards. Instead of focusing on transparency, youth development, and fixing the chronic issues in our leagues, they’ve chosen to concentrate power by extending presidential term limits.

— Owusu Cobbiah Godwin (@Owusu_cobbiah) August 12, 2025

Kurt when the third term is over will go back again for a fourth term, just wait and see, most of the delegates there have nothing better to offer Ghana football other than their own self interest.

It’s simple ,let’s not go to the stadia to watch any match since they believe supporters have no say!
However supporters can’t do this !!!!!!

— Keratin 🦋 (@geoslope2005) August 12, 2025

This isn’t the best allowing Kurt to go for the third time as GFA president then GFA will continue to be weak

— Nathaniel Okyere (@NattyBongo107) August 12, 2025

I’m more interested in the 10 clubs who voted against it.
Pls try get it give us

— Stephen Antwi (@yawantwistephen) August 12, 2025

It’s about the next World Cup, I guess……Kurt and his corhorts want to be there when the next World Cup comes so that they can enrich themselves once again.

— RKG (@ato_rkg) August 13, 2025

Journalists will be crying on shows. The whole football people themselves are not worried about the situation but journalists would be wailing. Ɛnyɛ yie oo

— KWARTENG!!!😎 (@kenacquah5) August 12, 2025

They didn’t allow you people to enter the room some yet you’re breaking their stories as if you were there. Respect yourself @JoySportsGH

— STEPHEN KYLE (@KyleStephen77) August 12, 2025

Shame on us…especially on the corrupt people we choose to lead us

— He (@TheKojoMadiba) August 12, 2025

Corrupt institutions being financed by taxpayers money. The Ghana government over the years haven’t learnt anything from this

— Punisher (@Dougie_Triks) August 12, 2025

We don’t want any noise pollution about how football is being poorly run again. Hypocrites!
