The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has donated GHS5 million and five Toyota Hilux pickups to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to support the fight against illegal mining.

The donation was made at a ceremony held at GoldBod’s head office in Accra on Monday, September 15, 2025.

GoldBod’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi Esq., who presented the items, underscored the organisation’s commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable mining practices. He explained that the support forms part of broader initiatives aimed at safeguarding the environment and improving the lives of mining communities.

“The Ghana Gold Board wants to buy more gold for purposes of foreign exchange generation for the country, but the gold we buy must be mined and sourced responsibly to create better value and in a manner that doesn’t undermine the sanctity of our environment. Our collective survival as a people depends on the success of the fight against illegal mining, and so we cannot afford to fail,” he said.

Mr. Gyamfi added that while GoldBod is committed to supporting persons who wish to engage in legal mining, it will fully back NAIMOS in clamping down on recalcitrant miners who continue to operate illegally.

He further announced upcoming GoldBod initiatives to ensure value-chain traceability in the gold trade sector and accelerate the formalisation of the small-scale mining industry. According to him, the organisation will also support the reclamation of 1,000 hectares of degraded forest lands and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ cooperative mining programme.

Receiving the donation, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, expressed deep appreciation to GoldBod. He described the support as a timely boost to the ongoing campaign against illegal mining.

The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to sustaining the fight, assuring the public that efforts will continue until Ghana’s destroyed forests are restored and polluted water bodies rehabilitated.
