Government to buy surplus grains from farmers – MoFA

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has announced measures to prevent losses from surplus grains expected during the 2025 harvest season.

With a bumper harvest anticipated, alongside carry-over stocks from 2024, the Ministry says it has provided the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) with significant resources to purchase excess produce for storage.

“This intervention will not only reduce post-harvest losses but also guarantee the availability of food reserves to cushion the nation against future shortages and emergencies,” the Ministry said in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 23.

The move, according to MoFA, marks the first time since the establishment of NAFCO that such resources have been committed to secure surplus food from farmers.

Urging farmers not to panic, the Ministry stated: “We want all farmers to remain calm and confident, as NAFCO will actively be in the market to purchase their grains and mitigate any adverse effects of excess grains.”

MoFA further assured the general public of its commitment to supporting the agricultural sector in collaboration with stakeholders. “Every grain produced by Ghanaian farmers will find a sustainable and profitable market,” the statement emphasized.

The initiative is expected to provide stability for farmers and strengthen the nation’s food security reserves ahead of possible emergencies.
