Tensions have erupted in Guinea-Bissau as an army officer announced on state television that President Umaro Embalo has been removed from office and all state institutions suspended.
The dramatic takeover reportedly happened shortly after the president banned his main opposition and declared himself winner of an election held just three days earlier.
Embalo was arrested in his office at the State House in Bissau as the military moved to take control of the country.
