Illegal sand mining in Gomoa East is posing a serious threat to the lives and livelihoods of residents, particularly those living around Fetteh Beach.
The activity has led to severe coastal erosion and other environmental challenges that could result in long-term disasters if not addressed.
Lovinghananews.com,reporter, Hajia Asana Gordon, who visited the area with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) team led by the Central Regional NADMO Director, Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood, observed significant risks to community infrastructure and livelihoods.
During a routine visit to Fetteh Beach, Mr. Dawood expressed grave concern over the ongoing secret illegal sand mining within the area. He appealed to traditional authorities to collaborate with the Assembly and NADMO to curb the menace urgently.
According to Mr. Dawood, directives have been issued to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), traditional authorities, landlords, landladies, NADMO management, security agencies, and other stakeholders within the district to join forces with NADMO’s operational team to bring these activities to a halt.
“Sand mining is a ticking time bomb, and we will not sit down for this beautiful natural sea defense to be destroyed by unpatriotic citizens and entrepreneurs,” Mr. Dawood stated firmly.
He further urged the Gomoa East MCE, Madam Margaret Naana Ackon, and the NADMO Director of the area to take legal action against anyone, regardless of political affiliation, who fails to comply with the directives. He also advised residents, particularly those in Fetteh, to help by stopping tipper trucks operating along the shoreline both during the day and at night.
On her part, Madam Margaret Naana Ackon assured that the Assembly will not spare anyone found engaging in sand mining, whether physically or even “spiritually.”
“The District Security Council (DISEC), NADMO, and stakeholders will patrol the seashore 24/7 to stop illegal sand mining and protect our coastal environment,” she disclosed.
Authorities have vowed to intensify monitoring and enforcement in the coming days to prevent further destruction of Fetteh Beach and safeguard lives and property.
