Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has strongly dismissed claims that his background as a farmer makes him unqualified to lead the Ministry of Health.
Speaking after criticism from Dr. David Tenkorang, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Mr. Akandoh said he remains proud of his farming roots.
“I understand, on the more lighter note, I have been reminded of the fact that I am a farmer. Yes, nobody needs to remind me. I am a proud farmer, and everybody knows it. Until my appointment I was one of the largest rice farmers in this country. I am proud of that,” he said a press conference on Thursday.
Dr. Tenkorang had earlier faulted the Minister’s handling of the violent incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), arguing that Mr. Akandoh lacked a deeper appreciation of hospital operations because “he is a farmer.”
In response, the Health Minister stressed that his commitment to service goes beyond such labels, noting that the government remains focused on addressing the nation’s health needs.
“Please, we have a lot to deliver, and some of these things will not divert our attention. We will continue to do our best for mother Ghana,” Mr. Akandoh assured.
