Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has the capacity to become Ghana’s first female President, as she is a strong and indisputable candidate, Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has stated.

He expressed his confidence in Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s leadership abilities, stating that “she is well-qualified to lead the nation.”

Mr Iddrisu stated this at the Ghana Teacher Prize event, held at the University of Health and Allied Sciences last Sunday.

The Minister of Education, who is being tipped to run as flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), explained that his latest endorsement was to clarify remarks he made during the Vice-President’s visit to the Ministry of Education.

During that visit, Mr Iddrisu offered prayers for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang and expressed the hope that she may one day be elevated to the office of the President.

“There were many of you who sought to give it your own interpretation. Prof. Jane, I am reminding them that my mother taught me that sometimes silence is golden because silence cannot be interpreted, but this one, I wanted an interpretation because a vice president irrefutably is a presumption that she can assume the high office of president,” he stated.

Welcoming Professor Opoku-Agyemang during a visit to the Ministry of Education on September 24, 2025, Mr Iddrisu said, “It’s my pride and honour and grace to welcome you back to the Ministry of Education, this time in an elevated capacity as the first female Vice President of our Republic.”

“It is my prayer that God will give you long life and good health, so that you will probably be elevated to become the first female president. God bless you,” he concluded.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang previously served as Minister of Education and became Vice-President following President Mahama victory last year.
