Japan outclass new-look Black Stars with 2–0 win in 2025 Kirin Cup opener

Japan opened their 2025 Kirin Cup campaign with a confident 2–0 victory over Ghana, handing the newly assembled Black Stars a difficult start to the tournament.

In a match where Ghana head coach Otto Addo introduced several fresh faces, the more experienced Japanese side showed composure and quality to secure all three points.

With many key players absent, Addo handed debuts to two players and entrusted Antoine Semenyo with the captain’s armband for the first time.

Despite the youthful energy in the Ghanaian lineup, Japan quickly asserted themselves.

Takumi Minamino opened the scoring with a brilliant finish after capitalizing on a defensive lapse from the Black Stars.

The goal unsettled Ghana, but they gradually settled into the game and defended resolutely to avoid conceding further before halftime, heading into the break trailing narrowly by 1–0.

Japan, however, doubled their lead early in the second half with a composed near-post effort, putting the match further out of Ghana’s reach.

The Black Stars struggled to create meaningful chances and appeared toothless in attack, unable to threaten the hosts consistently.

The day took an unfortunate turn for Ghana when Francis Abu suffered a serious injury while attempting to block a shot. His exit added to the team’s challenges and dampened the spirits of the traveling supporters.

Despite the defeat, there were several positives for Ghana. The introduction of more debutants, including Prince Owusu and Prince Adu Kwabena, gave the team a refreshed look and valuable experience. The newcomers showed promise, and Otto Addo will be encouraged by their determination and attitude.

As the Black Stars turn their attention to their next fixture against South Korea in Seoul, they will hope to build on the bright moments displayed and aim for a much-improved result.
