A security taskforce of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in the Ashanti Region has impounded 28 vehicles for various road transport offences, including charging unapproved fares at night.
The arrests were made at several unapproved transport stations within the Kumasi Metropolis as part of an intensified operation by the KMA’s Transport Department to clamp down on unregistered transport unions, vehicles without destination or assembly stickers, and drivers who overcharge passengers.
According to the Assembly, the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to sanitise the city’s transport system, ensure that all commercial drivers operate under recognised unions, and protect passengers from unfair treatment.
Head of Transport at KMA, Randy Wilson, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing transport regulations and maintaining order on the city’s roads.
“We are not relenting on our efforts to ensure that passengers are not surcharged beyond what they are supposed to pay. For anybody sitting in any car that you are being charged any amount that goes beyond what is acceptable, pick the vehicle number, pick the area you are traveling to and the amount you have been charged and send a text message or WhatsApp message to 0244540238. We will pick it, compile and use it to get to the police and the police will assist us in arresting the perpetrators,” he stated.
