Lordina Mahama pledges support for African women facing climate, conflict challenges

First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has reaffirmed her commitment to championing the resilience and empowerment of women and girls across Africa in the face of climate change and conflict.

Speaking at a First Ladies’ side event themed “Building Resilience for Women and Girls in the Face of Climate Change and Conflict” in New York on Tuesday, Mrs. Mahama described women and girls as central to Africa’s solutions.

“I pledge to support this campaign that centres on African solutions and strength, which is rooted in its women and girls.

“In the face of climate and conflict challenges, their courage sustains families and communities. By investing in their strength, we build resilience for generations to come,” she declared.

She emphasized the need to see women and girls not merely as victims but as drivers of transformation.

“Our African women and girls should not just be victims, but also be powerful agents of change and the pillars of our communities,” she added.

Reflecting on the gathering, Mrs. Mahama noted that discussions highlighted the disproportionate burden environmental degradation and armed conflicts place on vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls.

She further stressed that the collective commitment made by First Ladies to a unified campaign pledge signaled a strong and joint effort.

“The collective commitment made by all First Ladies to a unified campaign pledge demonstrates our joint effort to advocate for policies, mobilise resources, and implement programmes to address the specific challenges faced by women and girls in climate and conflict-affected regions,” she said.
