The Communications Officer of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Harrison Kojo Abbah, says the new leadership of the organisation has transformed NADMO into a proactive and preventive agency far beyond the era of merely distributing relief items such as rice and oil after disasters.
Speaking on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa morning show on October 9, Mr. Abbah said the Management of NADMO is working tirelessly to make Ghana a disaster-free zone through improved preparedness, prevention, and accountability.
“The new crop of NADMO Executives and Management are doing everything possible so that Ghana will become a disaster-free zone. We might not be able to eradicate all disasters, but for the major ones, we should be able to prevent them from happening.
If you look at the NADMO, we have built a NADMO that has gone past distributing rice and oil that is what we call the recovery stage,” he said.
According to Mr. Abbah, who is also a member of the NDC National Communications Team, the restructured NADMO is focused on disaster prevention and protection before responding to emergencies.
“We are building a NADMO that will, first of all, protect against disasters from happening. And if in our efforts to prevent and protect, an occurrence beyond our control leads to some unintended incident, that’s when we move to the recovery stage which remains part of our mandate,” he explained.
He expressed concern about the increasing levels of filth in Accra, noting that improper waste disposal is one of the leading causes of flooding in the city.
“A few months into coming to office, Lakeside flooded which was very surprising because that neighborhood is known to be clean with well-structured buildings, but now every place is filthy,” he lamented.
Mr. Abbah added that many residents now dispose of waste irresponsibly, contributing to environmental hazards.
“People come out of their houses with bags full of rubbish and dump them in unauthorized places. We can’t ignore this because it comes back to hurt all of us,” he said.
He further disclosed that NADMO now holds all departments accountable, ensuring that officers who fail to perform their duties face appropriate consequences.
“Now, we hold all departments accountable. If anyone isn’t working effectively, we write a report on their work, so they face the consequences,” he emphasized.
