The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Akwatia parliamentary by-election, with its candidate, Bernard Bediako, emerging victorious over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

The by-election, held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, was necessitated by the passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi of the NPP. The contest was seen as a critical test of strength between the two major political parties ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The Electoral Commission’s certified results showed Bediako securing 18,199 votes of the total valid votes cast. His closest rival, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 15,235 votes.

Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) trailed far behind with 82 votes. Out of the total ballots cast, 33,819 were valid, while 303 were rejected.

NDC supporters in Akwatia poured onto the streets singing and dancing to celebrate Bediako’s victory.

The outcome follows weeks of campaigning and predictions from independent polls, including the one projected by Global InfoAnalytics, which consistently tipped the NDC candidate as the frontrunner.

The Electoral Commission is expected to officially gazette the results in the coming days.
