New media must be subjected to same standards as traditional media – Sam George

Minister for Communication, Digital Innovation and Technology, Sam George, has stressed the need for new media platforms to be held to the same ethical and professional standards as traditional broadcasters.

Speaking at the “Broadcasting at the Crossroads” forum organised by the Africa Media Bureau at the Alisa Hotel on Friday, September 26, 2025, the Minister said that while the government supports the growth of digital platforms, their operations cannot escape regulation.

“While the Ministry is supportive of the use of new media to augment traditional media in the dissemination of information and the provision of educational and entertainment content, new media must subject itself to the same rigours of conventional media,” he stated.

Mr. SameGeorge cautioned against having “differing standards” for different forms of broadcasting, describing the practice as undemocratic.

“Once you broadcast, the ethics and standards of the craft must govern your operations. I am not speaking of censorship but regulation. The media, be it traditional or new, cannot be said to be above regulation. It cannot be the Wild West, where incredulous allegations are made, reputations are damaged, and images are soiled beyond repair simply for clickbait,” he said.

He clarified that the Ministry will not interfere with the editorial discretion of media houses, which he described as democratically protected. However, he emphasised that government has a responsibility to regulate how editorial content is broadcast to ensure fairness, accountability, and public trust.

The forum brought together policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders to deliberate on Ghana’s broadcasting future in the era of digital convergence.
