Nigeria, others join West Africa in launching ECOVISA to simply travel and trade

Nigeria has joined its West African neighbours in launching ECOVISA, a single visa system designed to make travel across the region seamless.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says the initiative will allow foreign nationals to move freely across 12 member states, including Ghana, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Nigeria, with just one visa.

ECOVISA aims to simplify travel, strengthen regional cooperation, and boost economic activity by making it easier for tourists, business travellers, and investors to explore multiple countries.

Modeled after Europe’s Schengen Visa, the system is expected to break down traditional barriers, enhance connectivity, and encourage cross-border tourism and investment.

Previously, visitors had to apply for separate visas for each country, a process often seen as cumbersome and time-consuming.

ECOVISA removes that challenge, allowing travellers to apply digitally for a single visa that grants access to all participating ECOWAS member states. This step is expected to make West Africa a more attractive destination for leisure and business travel alike.

ECOWAS has worked to ensure the smooth integration of ECOVISA with national visa systems.

In March 2025, a technical workshop in Lagos brought together IT specialists, immigration officials, and visa management experts from across the region to fine-tune the platform. The goal is a simple, secure, and transparent application process that protects sensitive data while giving travellers confidence in the system.

The introduction of ECOVISA is also seen as a major boost for tourism and regional business. From the vibrant markets of Lagos and Accra to the scenic beaches of Senegal and Sierra Leone, travellers will now have easier access to the region’s cultural, historical, and natural attractions.

Investors and business travellers can explore new markets, forge partnerships, and make investments without the previous visa hurdles, potentially driving growth in sectors like hospitality, agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

While the success of ECOVISA depends on full adoption across all member states, ECOWAS remains committed to ensuring that the platform is efficient, user-friendly, and ready to support the region’s economic ambitions.

By simplifying travel, ECOVISA promises to open a new chapter for West Africa, one of greater connectivity, accessibility, and economic opportunity.
