No political sponsorship or impropriety linked to SML founder – Lawyer

Lawyer for Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), Cephas Boyuo, has dismissed allegations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) suggesting political sponsorship, procurement breaches, or financial impropriety involving SML founder, Mr. Evans Adusei.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Friday November 7, Boyuo described the allegations as baseless and contrary to established records of Mr Adusei’s business operations and personal integrity.

“There is no evidence of political sponsorship, procurement influence or financial impropriety linked to Mr Adusei. His business profile, longstanding commercial reputation and proven competence in regulated sectors refutes any notion of political fronting. Mr Adusei is a self-made industrialist, whose integrity, business independence and professional legacy renders the OSP’s claim unsubstantiated and contrary to the factual records,” Mr Boyuo stated.

The OSP has accused SML Ghana of securing multi-million-cedi contracts with the GRA through irregular procurement processes and alleged political connections. The anti-corruption body subsequently launched an investigation into the agreement, citing concerns over transparency and value for money.

SML has consistently denied any wrongdoing, insisting that its operations and contractual engagements were transparent and followed due process.

Meanwhile, investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has urged the OSP to broaden its investigation and ensure accountability across all levels of the transaction.

He said he does not have evidence to remove any individuals from the list of those expected to face prosecution, but stressed that additional names, including Evans Adusei, who is alleged to be behind SML, should be considered.

“I did not encounter some of them in my investigation, but the OSP did. The addition should be Evans Adusei who is behind SML,” Manasseh Azure said on Channel One TV’s The Point Of View.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) began investigating the SML-GRA contract earlier this year following widespread public concern about its legality, procurement breaches, and value for money.

The OSP said its investigation established that there was no genuine need for contracting SML to perform the obligations outlined in the agreements.

“The contracts were secured for SML through self-serving official patronage, sponsorship and promotion based on false and unverified claims,” Kissi Agyebeng said.
