NPP shouldn’t have contested Akwatia by-election – Asiedu Nketia

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Asiedu Nketia, is of the view that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) shouldn’t have contested for the Akwatia by-election.

According to him, the party should have known that since they are not in power, the seat should have been given automatically to the NDC because they can help develop Akwatia.

He was speaking at Akwatia, where he has been campaigning ahead of the September 2, 2025, by-election.

“I am of the view that the NPP shouldn’t have contested the Akwatia seat. They should have left it for us because we are the ones in government. We can do whatever we want because we have the numbers too in Parliament.

I don’t think you people deserve an opposition MP. You deserve an MP who is in power and can be sent by the government to bring about development. You don’t deserve an MP who will join the NPP’s 87 MPs to walk out and, at the end of the month, draw his salary. Akwatia deserves Bernard Bediako, whose party is in power and can cause a change,” he told the charged NDC crowd.

Akwatia will go to the polls on September 2, 2025, to elect a member of parliament.

The Ghana Police Service says it has deployed 5,500 personnel to ensure peace during and after the election. Police will not condone any actions that contravene the law.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party has warned that it will not condone any masked policemen, as the NDC has planned to use masked policemen to cause violence in the constituency to instill fear and prevent people from coming out in their numbers to vote.
