Roads and Highways Minister, Governs Agbodza

Construction work on the stalled Ofankor -Nsawam stretch of the Accra -Kumasi Highway, is not likely to begin anytime soon, according to the National Road Contractors Association, despite calls for the completion of the road.

For the past three months, construction work on the project has come to a standstill.

The current bad state of that stretch, which is riddled with gullies and resulting in heavy traffic congestion, frequent vehicular breakdowns, has considerably increased travel time much to the discomfort of commuters.

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, told 3FM he was expecting the contractor to scale up work after government had released funds towards the project.

However, speaking to 3FM news, Chairman of the Association, Stephen Kwaku Attatsi says the release of funds does not mean an automatic return.

“When a contractor leaves a site and he has to come back, it takes a lot, so it will not be easy to come back immediately. The contractor has packed his equipment and machinery and it will take a while. The money was paid last week and it is not like coffee that you put in a cup and then you see the color and drink. So, I wouldn’t be in a position to say today or tomorrow,” he intimated.

The countdown to Thursday is on when a coalition of commercial transport operators will stop work and make the Pokuase Nsawam road impassable for motorists.

The coalition has been drawing government’s attention to the deplorable state of the roads and its dire impact on lives and economic activities
