Nsuaem: Manhunt for attackers after mob vandalises police station over false kidnapping

The Western Central Regional Police Command has pledged to arrest all individuals involved in a violent mob attack on the Nsuaem Police Station on Wednesday, after a false kidnapping alarm triggered chaos in the community.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Beatrice Turkson, the police have not yet made any arrests but are working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators who vandalised the station and destroyed property.

ASP Turkson told Citi News that the incident began when some residents apprehended a man identified as Moses, accusing him of kidnapping two children aged between five and seven. The suspect was handed over to the police for investigation.

However, upon interrogation, the children — in the presence of their parents — confessed that the man had not kidnapped them. They explained that they had only approached him for help to cross the road.

Despite this clarification, a mob of about 500 people besieged the Nsuaem Police Station demanding that the suspect be released to them. The crowd later went on a rampage, setting fire to exhibits including several motorbikes, two pickup trucks, and parts of the police station building.

ASP Turkson described the attack as unacceptable and warned that the police would not tolerate acts of mob justice. She assured that investigations are underway to bring all offenders to justice and restore calm to the area.

“How it happened there was no way we could effect an arrest. They were many, they were numbered about 500 that besieged a small police station at Nsuaem. The Police Intelligence Department(PID) has taken over investigations, and we’ll definitely get to arrest the people that were involved; there are footages on social media; some of them their faces are showing. So we’ll go after them for them to face the law,” she said.

Police presence has since been reinforced in the community to prevent further disturbances.
