President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to pursuing justice for the transatlantic slave trade, announcing that the country will formally move for slavery to be recognized as one of the greatest crimes against humanity at the United Nations next year.

In a statement shared after a garden conversation with Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, President Mahama emphasized that his efforts are not about seeking sympathy, but about demanding accountability and restoration.

“At the UN General Assembly this year, I sent notice that Ghana intends to file a motion at the United Nations next year to declare slavery as one of the greatest crimes against humanity,” President Mahama stated.

As the African Union Champion for Reparations, he stressed the moral and historical necessity of the move, adding, “I see this cause not as a plea for charity, but as a demand for justice and restoration.”

President Mahama further expressed confidence in the solidarity of both African and Caribbean nations in supporting the initiative.

“Mr Prime Minister, I know I can count on your support and the support of our colleagues in the Caribbean and the African Union to support this motion,” he said.
